1.  Revision of the Faculty Handbook

a.   Amendment of Section 5.6.12

Changes to the Statutes in 5.6.12 were heard by the General Faculty in their meetings in November 27, 2007 and February 5, 2008 and were approved at both meetings.  The change amends the charge to Student Grievance and Appeal Committee by deleting their responsibility for conducting hearings for students appealing a judicial decision.  These responsibilities were assigned to other parties in the latest Student Code of Conduct adopted by the faculty in their November 28, 2006 meeting.

b.   Amendment of Section 10.7.1 (in part)

A change was heard in first reading by the General Faculty at their February 5, 2008 meeting and fully approved in the second reading on April 22, 2008.  When more than one position on a given committee needs to be filled by election, the change provides for the Executive Board to make a pool of candidates 50% larger than the number of positions to be filled.  Voters will indicate their preference for a number of candidates equal to the number of positions to be filled and the persons with the highest vote totals will be elected.  The Faculty also decided to use these rules on a provisional basis for the spring 2008 elections.

c.   Amendments of Sections 10.7.9 and 10.7.10

Another change was heard in first reading by the General Faculty at their February 5, 2008 meeting and fully approved in the second reading on April 22, 2008.  The changes amend the formulas for calculating representation of each college on the Undergraduate Curriculum and Graduate Curriculum Committees so that the approximate size of the committees will remain around 20 and each college has representation in proportion to measures of their activity in teaching.  In addition, each college will have no fewer than two representatives and no more than seven. The Faculty also decided to use these rules on a provisional basis for the spring 2008 elections.

d.   Amendments of Sections 5.2.3, 5.2.5, and 10.2.2

Finally, changes were heard in first reading by the General Faculty at their February 5, 2008 meeting and fully approved in the second reading on April 22, 2008.  These changes provide for units now in the Services and Central Administration aggregate to handle their own elections of representatives to the General Faculty Assembly when they are large enough.  In addition, should a vacancy in one of these positions occur mid-term, the Executive Board will fill the vacancy by appointment using the same methodology as is used for vacancies in Standing Committees.  The Faculty also decided to use these rules on a provisional basis for the spring 2008 elections.
